ELMHURST – Zahra Suratwala, an Elmhurst resident, is announcing her candidacy for the DuPage County Board, District 1. Suratwala is an advocate, mother, writer, and active community member.
Zahra has dedicated her career to furthering women’s empowerment, through co-founding the I Speak for Myself book series, traveling on behalf of the U.S. State Department to Southeast Asia to engage in cross-cultural dialogues, and as a professor of English at Elgin Community College.
If elected, Zahra will be an advocate for the middle-class families of DuPage County. She’ll work to lower property taxes, secure quality of life, and deliver the future that residents and their children deserve.
She is also running to bring a more diverse perspective to the DuPage County Board – as a citizen, a woman, and a Muslim. She passionately believes that women need to be better represented at all levels of government, as more women leaders create greater women’s empowerment.
“More women need to run for office, and I hope to be a part of changing the face of leadership by the time our children take the reins,” said Zahra Suratwala. “As a mother and small business owner, I plan on bringing a citizen’s perspective to the County Board and will work tirelessly to represent and serve this diverse community.”

Zahra Suratwala is the Co-Founder of the I Speak for Myself® book series and a professor of English at Elgin Community College. She has also taught in Egypt and in Thailand. Zahra was invited by the U.S. State Department to travel to Thailand and Cambodia to engage in cross-cultural dialogue. She is an active volunteer at Emerson Elementary School in Elmhurst, as well as at her local mosque. Zahra has been a resident of Elmhurst for 10 years and was born and grew up in Chicagoland.
